hull flexibility?

Postby K.C. Walker » Thu Aug 07, 2008 9:25 am

I've been wondering what a normal amount of hull flexibility is on a DS I. When I sail in choppy water I feel flex through the floorboards. Is that normal? My boat has one stringer.

I noticed that some people on this forum talk about making a stiffer hull for racing. What is the preferred method for doing that?

Thanks for your thoughts, KC

damaged stringer

Okay, I've decided to revive this topic. Because, I at least have one answer to my inquiry. When I took the floorboards out of my boat last fall I noticed that the stringer on the port side had been neatly cut about every 18 inches. Ah ha! That explains some of the flexibility! Of course, I turned the floorboards over to look and found that someone had replaced the "feet" of the flooring with aluminum angle brackets and they rested neatly on the stringer. Or, neatly in the cuts of the stringer.

Part of my spring preparation for this year will be to repair the stringer and replace the "feet" on my flooring.

I sure am thinking a lot about sailing now that the weather has turned a little warmer!
