Vang Boom Setup Change

Postby jdubes » Thu Mar 26, 2009 9:48 am

Ok, i would like to convert my boom vang setup to something like this. The only challenge is that i don't have the hoop at the bottom of my mast to hook it up. This picture shows it clearly. What are my options? Can i drill into my mast and install this hoop? Sounds really bad to me? Thoughts?

I think that the bail installation is a common enough method for attaching the vang. It has proven reliable, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I do get some odd disconcerting noise from it, though. When the boom swings from side to side the vang can kind of stick and then slip on the bail and make a noise like something's breaking.

I think with the added tension of this style of vang you do have to be more concerned about the strength of your attachments and the bail is very strong.
