Stringer replacement

Postby K.C. Walker » Thu Apr 09, 2009 4:31 pm

I thought I would wait on this one because I've been posting so much lately and I was afraid people might get sick of me. However, Marc commented at the end of my trailer thread about stringers that I had already brought up. So, here goes!

First from the other thread:

[quote="MarcCram"]It is balsa wood that was used in the core. And your right it looks like soggy cardboard or compost when it gets wet. I'm having the hardest time right now cutting my 3" SCH40 conduit in STRAIGHT thirds so I can glass them in place of the balsa that I cut out.

First off, Marc how did you cut out your stringers? I figured that I could grind them out with 24 or 36 grit but that seems a little messy.

I've been thinking about reinforcing the hull below the water line with a structural foam with glass over the top of it in a sandwich. I think this would be class legal and would be taking the place of stringers on a rather grand scale. It seems to me that once I get the stringers out there is some more area to grind down but not that much. It seems like using 3/8 inch or possibly 1/2 inch core-cell from Jamestown ought to stiffen the hull up considerably, much more than stringers would. I don't think it would add too much weight at 5 pounds per cubic foot. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Good ideas.

See thread on same subject in the repair and improvement section.
