mast identification

Postby MrPlywood » Sun Sep 03, 2006 3:48 am

I've recently bought boat 847 (at least that what the sail says) and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to identify the maker of the mast. Don't know if it really makes a difference, but I'd like to know as much as possible about the boat.

I've looked all over and can't find any markings. It has upper jumper stays, which will be removed thanks to the input from Phill and others. It does not appear to be tapered. The boat has one of the rare wire travellers, if that makes any difference.
Here are a few pics:

Thanks in advance...

I can not identify your mast for sure. A picture of the spreaders area and goose neck, may help. Given the vintage of your class number 847, and that the top looks like the mast may be tapered, I would guess that the mast may be one of the early Proctor 'E' sections. If that is the case, and no one has given the mast 'hinge surgery' (still one piece to the keel) , you have a very desirable mast.

Thanks for taking the time to look Phill. I've posted some more pics in my gallery. This one is of the gooseneck area.

I hope that I got what you need. I did find the name "Holt Allen" on a piece of hardware near the mast head, and included that pic.

The mast is still in one piece. I read through the "mast cutting" posts, casually mentioned it to my dad and he almost throttled me over the phone :)

I'm pretty sure it's not tapered. I measured with a poor man's caliper (a C-clamp, gently) and the profile seems very close if not the same at the masthead down to the tapering limit (6 feet from the masthead) mentioned in the class rules. I don't know how "tapered" a tapered mast is though.

Thanks again...

Thanks for the extra pictures. I can not positively ID your mast.
If it were tapered it would be obvious enough the C clamp caliper wouldnt be needed (good idea tho). If forced to make a guess, think you have an early Alspar, or very similar section. Most of the fittings looked very similar to what was on my original mast from 1966.

Glad to hear the mast is a keel stepper. After a couple of set ups, you wont really feel its any more difficult than a hinged step.

Good luck, and keep enjoying one of the best all around dinghys.
