Nice job on the chart. Perhaps you could create it as a spreadsheet format (looks like it is) then it will be more readable.

I'm not sure about these years that are being tossed out. My boat is 3056 and I understand that it is a 68. I have a bunch of old Daysailer association rosters from the early 60's through the 80's that I think I will go through and see if I can't get a little more information. Maybe we can pin down the dates a little better.

HN 10261,
Color: White with Light Blue Deck (pictures in the Gallery, but the sail number on that sail is wrong, Sail is 12375, should be 1868.)

The cleats for the jib were old...what is that stuff, it is sort of like a really hard cardboard, vermiculite maybe, don't know if they are original.
I am in Columbus, Ohio. The boat was in Delaware at some point, I removed a sticker from their DNR.

Thanks all for your enthusiastic responses to the little chart. I'll try to work on it after the weekend when I get back to my house PC "tiller."

Andy, it would be fun to have the data on those rosters. The "dates" on the chart are mostly from what owners have stated in forum posts and I imagine some are from bills of sale while many are word of mouth attributions. When I or some guesses, I try to make that clear in the micro chart/spreadsheet within the limited space (contrained because there is at this point a trade off between allocated image space per file and resolution and legibility.

One concern I have is that of privacy. Since the forum is viewable to the web public, I appreciate that some owners might not care to have certain details included. I'm reluctant to make public information that isn't already public without getting the permission of the owners. I might in this case just enter the Hull and class number and less personal details -- or just put owner's initials or handle.

I imagine that somewhere out there are others who have caught the O'Day small boat bug and have tried to keep track of some of the dates. One of my interests at this juncture is also that of the O'Day Ospray and I'd love to hear more from those folks (private mail on daysailer.org account is fine). I've gleaned some info from these forums and other web sites and have here and there stumbled upon a few other Ospray owners. It is a 15' 8" LOA day sailer that is much like the DS1 but with more of a sweep profile -- an Alberg-like aft upsweep.

I love messing around in small boats, especially beautiful little sailboats/day sailers. And I enjoy history and maintaining and restoring beauty. Thus, you can see how I am hooked. Hooked perhaps beyond my abilities -- ambition outrunning resources . I appreciate the community spirit at this forum and amoung small boat sailers in general.

O.K, I had some time and went through some of the old Association rosters and here is what I found out. This is by no means 100% accurate, but I think it may help out a bit. In the early years they had a section that listed members by the sail number, which made this easy. The "*" numbers are when they stop doing that list and I had to go through each fleet and region and find the highest number. If the HIN number changed in 1972 it would be easy to see if this is correct.

I recently got a hold of a Oday sailer, the owner said it was a 1974 model, but after seeing the models and numbers here it could be the oldest here. The maker was Marscot plastics, the Hull number is "1949" and the sail number is "103" hope to hear from some others who sailboats are near this number, I do pictures of the data plate which is stil afixed to the stern area.

Lots of numbers and History in this topic. Maybe we should merge info with the official / Unofficial tread and come up with the "Final" official / unofficial number list. With that said Jack59 your sail number is very close to mine, one of the closest I have seen. What is your deck color, I have a"green top". Also when I uncover my boat in lets say April I will get to the Hull Number which will be interesting to see it compared to yours. But as it is, it appears that I have either a 1968 or 69 vintage, no thanks to the "title" stating 1973.

I just sent an e-mail to the DS fleet measurer yesterday, trying to find out more information on this exact topic!

From what I have read on the history of the DS, the one component in the numbering system that seems to not be addressed as yet is the place of manufacture. Mine was made in Brampton, Ontario. I assume that there are quite a few places that these boats were made..? Hence, the different 'yards' may have different groups of numbers that were alloted to them. This would translate into different years of manufacture for different boat/sail numbers because different 'yards' may take an undetermined amount of time to build a different boat type(days...years?).
I would like to offer my help to compile & make presentable a list of the boats. Achieving some sort of 'map' that we can use to correlate a hull/sail number to a year of manufacture would be great! I'm confident that this topic comes up again & again...probably every time someone buys a DS & wants to know more.
I have some pics of my Stella on the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Oday site (yes, she is a project boat that I bought last Aug). Included in my group of photos is the tag [img]http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Oday/photos/view/44bc?b=5[/img] from the boat builder; it shows Hull No. 17519 Class No. 3171. I have no idea of her build year. From what I saw on hightide's chart, it looks to be a '66.

I'll add mine to the list. I was told by the previous owner that it was a late 50's boat, but I am not so sure looking at some of the dates/number listed here.
