Full hull number format

Hello all,

Brought home my first day sailer this weekend. I had a Javelin prior to this, looking forward to sailing again. Anyway, the hull has been sanded and painted a few times and the hull number is nearly gone. Using the old crayon etching technique (remember from elementary school?) I have recovered most of it, but it isn't perfectly clear. Can anyone with a close DS 1 help to verify this? Appears to be XDYD68721073. I am certain of the 6872 (the sails are numbered and I am only the second owner). It is a ds1, molded glass seats, has the rubber "O'Day" tags on cuddy sides, with a motor well. Sorry to bring up the 'hull #' thing again but I can't find reference to the characters other than sail #s. When I refinish the transom I want to fix the HIN so it is readable again. Thanks.

Ok, just looked under 'history' here in the forum, think I have the answer I need, although 6872 seems out of range for a DS1 built by O'Day. Is there any way to distinguish a Can-am built DS 1 from an O'Day?

(credit D Misunas) Can Am Sailcraft manufactured the DS in 1974 with hull nunbers 6960 to 7000, although it sounds like (according to your HIN) was built in October 1973.

I have seen Dave's chart. So the Can Am numbers are definitive... unlike the the end numbers for the O'Day built DS 1s? By the chart 6872 shouldn't exist (late #, 10/73 Production). You can see why I'm a bit perplexed.

Very interesting. If your boat is indeed a DS I, made in 1973, then it's likely to be one of the last DSI's made by O'Day (not Can-Am), and fills in a hole in the chart, when we thought the DS I was not made.

I expect the starting numbers for each builder are pretty accurate. The last numbered boat built is probably not so certain, since a builder and the Class Association would have been far more excited about the first boat that is built, but not so much the last one.

It looks like I get to fill in a late number in the chart for 1974. I just bought this boat in the sail number is 7002. the complete hull number is XDYD70020374 http://www.walkerguitars.com/photos/daysailer/

So, this must be one of the last boats built by Can-Am. Yes? It does have an O'day logo on the side of the cutty.
