Centerboard Troubles

OK. I think I have the centerboard handle et al figured out but now I have a new question. My centerboard has a crack down one edge of one side. There appears to be a hollow area inside the centerboard and along with the hole for the pin to hold the centerboard up, there is another hole on one side down toward the bottom. Is there an intentional void inside the centerboard designed to fill up with water? If not, can I glass over everything after filling the void with epoxy?

Andy, what year is your DS I? The board on my '64 is solid, but there seem to have been a lot of production variations. Others will know more than I do.

Probably there should not be a hole admitting water into the board. Inside my CB there is a metal rod resembling rebar. As long as it is encased in fiberglass it is OK, at least in theory. Water inside the board, especially salt water, will cause rust = fiberglass delaminates and CB falls apart.

I believe it is a 1970. I don't see any rebar, but there could be some in there. Should I leave it hollow or fill it in?

Lots of Centerboard discussions in the past weeks. I seem to remember somebody recently commenting that one or more of the centerboard versions on the daysailer had been built hollow and there was a drain hole near the bottom to let watter in/out. I did a quick scan and can't find it now, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading it.

It would appear to be an intentional void with drain hole. Would you try to fix centerboard with void and drain or would you fill void and hole?

I think the posts with the void and drain hole in the centerboard were on the DSII.

O'Day seems to have grabbed parts they had available, rather than being very precise in sticking to a model specific parts list. My spreader brackets are not actually from a DS, for example. If the hole look intentional, then that's what it would be.

SO...would you leave the void or fill it? It seems to be pretty problematic.

Why problematic if it is factory? Board should be designed for it, then, no?

It has cracked down the length of the void on one side (probably 10") and about 4 " on the other side. I found the DS2 posting about the void and it sounds like people had swelling problems. Do you think that someone put a DS2 centerboard on my DS1? It uses a handle to raise and lower it.

OK with cracks, then.

Fill it, yes, but with what. You don't want anything that can get waterlogged, but the volume would bee too large to use epoxy.

PS, yes someone, factory or PO re-purposed the other style CB

I don't know if a DS2 centerboard would have the hole for the handle on a DS1 in the same place as the centerboard bolt would be on a DS2, but who knows what may have been swapped in over the years. I know that D&R sell the DS2 centerboard without the hole drilled in it because the DS2 has two different methods as pivot points for the centerboard.

I expect the pivot to be in the same location...would be a different boat otherwise.
