Hull ID Number (not DS number) question

Hey all:
After waiting a few weeks for the seller to obtain a duplicate title (he had lost the original) I finally received it in the mail yesterday and registered it. In filling out the paperwork I gave the Dept. of Licensing the registration number that I was given from the seller's previous registration, an HIN of a 6-digit number. This is NOT the Hull Number or Class Number on the O'Day metal plate that came with the boat. It also is not the Oregon Boat Registration number that he had on the boat itself.
I used this as the HIN, and then began wondering if in fact I shouldn't be using the DS Hull Number I have. I remember being unable to locate this 6-digit number on the boat when I first purchased it.
What's the situation if I own a boat and the "official" registerered hull ID is nowhere to be found on the boat? I can just see me trying to explain to a patrol guy on the lake that the official number of the boat is not the REAL number of the boat. I'm in Washington State - I know laws differ. I'm reluctant to bring this up with the Licensing people until I think I know what's going on. Any ideas on where this might be located on this 1964 DSI?
By the way, I just received my new halyards from D & R. They are spankin' beautiful. Now that the beginning of winter is here (Down to high 30's last night, rainy) I'm going to have to drive down a few hours' south to get some warmer winds and try out these new sheets.
Thanks much in advance,
Carlos
