From the reading I've done on this site, my 1971 DS1 is more likely a 1966? This is based on hull number of 12346 and class number of 2303 from plate mounted on forward bulkhead. Not that it matters, the boat is in good shape and with some minor rigging replacement should be a lot of fun to sail!

I think that the reason a lot of boats have the date 1971 associated with them is that boats were required to have a hull identification number including a manufacturing date associated with them stamped into the hull starting in 1971. Boats resold and licensed after that time were likely given the date 1971 since there was no way to tell for sure when they were built, and that they were built no later than 1971.

But now, with the help of research done by folks in this class association the true dates are being learned.

Thanks, Bob...see below also!

Before the requirement for the 12-digit Hull I.D. Number, O'Day gave every boat 2 numbers, a Hull# and a Class#. The Hull# represented how many total boats O'Day had built, and the Class# represented how many of that Class O'Day had built. So your 1967 DS I was the 15344th boat that O'Day built, and the 2724th DaySailer. If there is a number on your sail, it should be the Class# 2724.
This was O'Day's method of serial numbers for their boats until the 12-digit HIN went into effect on November 1, 1972.

According to Rod Johnson, my DS1 is the 2303rd DaySailer built which looks about right for the 1966 date.... 8) 258
