Has anyone got ideas for a boom tent to be used for shade?

Those are only good as a weather cover... even then they are not all that great. I've already lanched my boat, she's sitting in the water now, had to bail abut 6" of water out of the boat on Sunday from all this blasted rain! Ugh is it ever gonna stop???

Hey John-

Great job with your DaySailer...I am looking to make or purchase a boom tent to use for shade at anchor out at the sand bar...makes for a great way to keep the cockpit cool enough for the kids to get in a nap--without having to climb under the cuddy! I have the original cockpit cover/boom tent that came with the boat and, amazingly, there is only a little water in the boat right now--after somewhere between 6" to 7" of rain!!
I am up near Lake Sunapee and we have seen major flooding all around the area...several roads washed out, too!

Yeah you're not to far away from me. Sunapee is a beautiful lake.

I made my own cover, I have both the original (ripe with age and all tore up from a storm) and a newer replacement (again ripe with age and full of holes from bird droppings). Both are canvas and simply don't stand up to the weather very well. I made my new cover from a coated sunbrella fabric. I purchased enough to do the cover for about $75.00 in total. I think I needed around 8 yards. The reason why I am having trouble with water getting in is I have not yet enclosed the front part of the tent where it wraps around the mast. So with the boat in the water the wind and rain is blowing in the front of the cover. Had I known all this rain was coming I would have not put the boat in but at the time I was so darn excited to get it launched I was not exactly thinking ahead.

Oh well... anyways it's really easy to duplicate and after marking and cutting the material it took about 2 hours to sew it all up and put grommets in for the rub rail clips. Beats the almost $400.00 it costs to get one professionally done. Plus I had my choice of colors at no additional charge :-)

I'll probably never take the sail boat over to sunapee as it's moored on Lake Wentworth for the summer, but every once in a while I do head that way with the powerboat for a sunday afternoon on the sand bar. I love the color of yours, that green hull is rather unusual, I've never seen one like it.

Hey John-

Nice! The boat looks awesome at its mooring. I have some ideas for a boom tent based on the design in the picture below--I have a couple of old shock-corded fiberglass tent poles that should work fine for this!

Wow - that looks great. I can feel another project welling up in me, yet another trip to West Marine (and maybe REI for the poles...)
