Daysailer emblem

Postby jmj.2005 » Mon Jan 01, 2007 5:05 pm

I have a 1966 O'Day DS1 that is missing the O'Day Daysailer emblems from both sides of the cuddy cabin. Does anyone know of a person or business who would have emblems, new or used, for sale? Thanks.

I thought I saw those at either DR marine or Cape Cod Ship Builders.

No dice on either D&R or Cape Cod. Does anyone on this post have any that they'd be interested in selling? Thanks.

emblem

Postby crawford » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:49 pm

You can actually make your own! Borrow an emblem from another DSer. Take the emblem and coat it with wax. Parafin works fine, as a release agent.
Then pour an inch layer of Plaster of Paris into a shoe box. Carefully work in the emblem just to the top of the emblem. You only want an imprint.
Once the plaster has hardened carefully lift out the emblem. This should leave a good imprint in the plaster.
Next mix up about five oz of polyester resin to fill the mold. I usuall shred a few fibers into the resin for strength.
Once it is dry/hard you can lift out a new emblem for your boat.
This is cheap (my wife says I am really guilty), and easy.
Clean it up then paint it.
Attach to your boat.

Thanks for the information...I had considered that option. Any one viewing this forum willing to lend me their emblems for a weekend? Thanks.

I am the only DS-er that I know of in my area(Barrie, Ontario, CAN). I had no idea that my old boat was supposed to come with emblems on it! I'd be interested in this project as well. I could make two sets of the plaster if a mold volunteer lived closer closer to me than to jmj.2205 I could then forward on a set to jmj.2005. Hopefully, he/she would consider this option for me too. :D
Location details of the boat-bling would be helpful too.

Getting Plastered in Ontario

Postby Marv Irwin » Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:55 pm

Rossinvrland,

I can help out here........when spring comes....

Although winter in Northern Ontario has been exceptionally mild, I'm not going to make any predictions about how long this reprieve will last. When I de-tarp the boat in Apr?May?June?, I'll make a mold of the starboard emblem and perhaps we can meet in Parry Sound for the hand off. My port emblem has seen better days...so we will need a collaborator for this side.

I do have a suggesstion about making the mold. Although plaster would undoubtedly work, I think alginate would be a much better choice. Alginate is a rapidly setting, flexible material which dentists use to make initial impressions of patient's dentitions. Ask your dentist if you could purchase a small quantity. This stuff records fine detail and it will "let go" a whole lot easier than plaster. If your dentist is a really good buddy, ask if he can spare some temporary crown acrylic material for the actual emblem. This will record the fine detail of the impression better than glass resin.

Regards,
Marv

I'm in northwest South Carolina, the Greenville area. I'd be more than willing to pay the shipping both ways for the set of borrowed emblems or a mold. Thanks.

Has anyone had any success on this yet?

I was lucky enough to have two "C" quality emblems on my Day Sailer. They were starting to crack and warp so I bonded one to a piece of aluminum and am in the process of trying to make a good quality mold. If it all works out I will be willing to help out anyone who needs some emblems.

Here is a look at what I have so far, the mold is still not worth using but it is close.

Daysailer Emblem

Hi, thanks for your reply. The emblem that you show in the photo looks like you're definitely on the right track. I think if you get a good set of molds made you'll have a business on your hands!!!!! I know a buyer who would be interested in a pair (me)!!!

DS emblems

Postby beachboy46 » Sat Jul 14, 2007 12:37 pm

Hi I just found your web sight and have been going through boxes in storage. I have some old DS I parts including a set of cuddy side logos one is in two halves the other is whole. I think the two halves can be glued. If you are still in need make me an offer. I can send photos. I also have an old boom that was used for racing, the original DS I bronze mast step screw, centerboard bushing, mahogany oar chock, a Fisher spinnaker like new.
I am in Oregon, contact me at bpitt0@yahoo.com, Brad.
