DS ID by Color ... ?

Postby Arey's Pond » Sun Sep 18, 2011 11:10 am

We had a light blue top DS back in the 60s/70s - Sat/sailed out of Arey's Pond.
So as I'm looking for a older DS (like our old one) I was wondering about the color schemes of these older DSs for ID purposes (and newer ones)?

Q's
Were the light blue tops (decks) all earlier ones (up to what # ...)
Were the colored hulls all later?
Were they all mixed up - per special orders back then?
Was there an O'Day scheme to the colors?
Etc.

And ...
What are the benifits / drawbacks of the DS I's compared to the IIs, IIIs, etc.?

Thanks a lot - :)
Randy

I hope to find our old sail # (maybe in an old picture) - 7XX rings a bell ...
I think I have hull # - if that will help me?

Note - I do not know the fine differences of the DS I, II, IIIs etc. or the intracacies of each ...
(I do know the general differences of each)

Note - this could go w/ history forums too I suppose - but I put it here with DS 1s

There's a spreadsheet for DS modification history. You could add a field for deck/hull color. To locate the spreadsheet search the forum.

DS1 are a little bit easier to maintain because of the single hull. There are fewer inaccessible or hard to access spots than on a DSII.

Spread Sheed on DS evolution

Postby Arey's Pond » Mon Sep 19, 2011 5:42 am

GreenLake or others -
I'm looking ... I'm looking for the DS spread sheet ?

Found the one with the Manufactures and years (a short table)
But not a big one of DS changes over the years ...

Looked mostly in History and maint. and fixing section of the forum.

Any guesses where it's at ...
Thanks in advance

Link to the spreadsheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... n_US#gid=0

I don't think therre's any real timing coordination to the colors, though I could be wrong. There were some anniversary and commemorative models that got turned out. Deck colors seem to be pretty much white, beige, blue, or green (variously sea foam, pale, or turqoise).

A sail number in the 700's would make it one of the earliest we have info on- 766 and 847 are represented on the list, at least.

As for differences between I, II, and III, IIIs are not class legal, as the hull shape changed. Is and IIs have the same hull shape, so the difference is a single (I) or double (II) hull. The cuddy on Is is open, on IIs it closes off. There are other differences, but at a glance, that's an easy way to tell a I from a II.

Now, sadly, powered boating...
