In some of the photos in the gallery I have noticed a boom crutch made up of two pieces of wood made into an x to support the boom, how long does each piece of wood need to be ?

I make mine 50 inches long. It puts the boom at a perfect height for my cover.

Does anyone have plans for a boom crutch that rides in the gudgeons

The boom doesn't extend that far, is the only problem.

I have a mast support for trailering that rides in the gudgeons - it's basically a 1x4 with a notch on the top and pintles bolted to it.

To make that a boom crutch out of it, I would take a shorter 1x4 and angle it back from right above the transom to where it meets the end of the boom.

Then something to hold it at that angle. Perhaps a wedge of 3/4" plywood? Or another piece of 1x4 as a cross member...

Coat everything liberally with epoxy and resist the urge to varnish it, use any good spray paint to provide UV cover for the epoxy.
