Just Aquired a Day Sailer I

Postby jeadstx » Sat Apr 23, 2016 3:22 am

Last Saturday I picked up a Day Sailer I. The paper work and registration says it is a 1969 model, but I think it might actually be a 1966 model according to the "official/unofficial list" on this site. The ID plate is missing, but the sail/class number is 3229 which should put it about 1966. The boat is in great shape for it's age.

This boat was bought by a man in northeast Texas who brought it up from Corpus Christi Texas back in January and started restoration on it. He was coming along on the boat (see posts on Day Sailer Facebook page) when he decided to sell it. The boat had sat for about 20 years unused in Corpus Christi. Boat and trailer registration both expired in 1995. My plans are to continue the restoration (plus upgrades) and use the boat as a loaner race boat to help with our new Fleet 135 on Canyon Lake, Texas to introduce others to the Day Sailer. Our fleet is currently all Day Sailer II boats. I still have my Day Sailer II as well, although I will be sailing this boat as well.

The boat came with the jumper stays still attached. The floor boards are missing and will have to be built. The boat is in very good shape and already cleaned up by the man I bought it from. Other than the floorboards the boat is all intact and in stock condition. It came with two mainsails and a jib. One of the mainsails and the jib appear to be original to the boat. The other main is still like a new sail (although a little dirty) in it's bag and probably was new before this boat went into it's 20 year sleep. One interesting item that came with the boat was cockpit cushions. May be factory from the look of them as they are of similar construction to those that were made for the Rhodes 19. The zippers need replacement. The guy I got the boat from already removed the zippers.

Here are a few pictures.

Well, John, at this rate, you can open an O'Day museum, soon :)

It only looks like it. I don't have all the early O'Day boats yet, just the ones that use the same boom are in the "O'Day Collection". Paperwork arrived today, next I get to play with Texas Parks & Wildlife to get it registered and that can be an adventure all in itself even when all the paperwork is correct.
