Intro and my new DS I

Hi - I wanted to introduce myself and my recently purchased DS I.

Joined the DSA in January, spent a lot of time on the DS Forum, reading a lot of posts (great information here), got Roger’s DS II book, and have been actively looking for a boat to buy.

I grew up in NJ sailing Sunfish on a lake, moved on to some bigger boats in late 70’s and then in the early 80’s owned and sailed a Sonar class keel boat for a couple of years.  Also taught sailing (intro class) one summer sailing J-24 & Sonars at the New York Sailing School on City Island in the Bronx. Have sailed off and on over the years, but now that we are retired I wanted to get back into owning a boat and sailing.

Currently my wife and I will spend summers in Eastham, MA on Cape Cod and will be sailing the DS here.

The boat is a 1993 Sunfish Laser built DS I, hull # 14061 and looks to be in really good shape, it has some hardware upgrades, rigging upgrades, newer sails, newer centerboard & rudder. Boat was raced by the previous owners and has a DSA Measurement Certificate. Trailer looks like it needs some work.

I am in the process of going through the whole boat, checking all of the rigging, all of the hardware and hope to get on to the water in early June. It still is cold out here in MA.

GreenLake does a great job as Moderator so thought I’d help out by posting
some initial questions I have regarding the rigging and tabernacle set up, but will post those questions in the appropriate section.

Looking forward to contributing to the forum and really looking forward to sailing my DS.

Thanks in advance for replies!
Rob

Here are a couple of pictures of the boat in the driveway.

Nice boat.

Seems to have a "hot" side. :)

Funny :)

Yes the boat's name is Red Hot, but after some work on one side of the boat by previous owner it lost the Hot.

May rename / re-christen the boat.

Thanks

Is the name done a "sticker"? Those are easy to apply, but it's good to keep them away from places where the hull is most likely to make contact with anything (or from fender locations).

Not a sticker, hand painted.

Thanks for thoughts on location.

Can recommend stickers when / if you rename. They aren't really "stickers" in the sense that they don't have glue, but somehow they stick anyway.

Hi GreenLake,
I just bought a 1993 Sunfish DS1 and looking to put a name on it. Would love to know more about the “stickers” you mentioned. I’m in Minnesota if it matters.
Thanks!

I’m in Minnesota, too!

I put a name across the transom of my DS2 a year ago. At Office Max they have a service to make custom signs, including die-cut self-stick vinyl. The small size, 12 by 18 inches, was perfect and their 20% off coupon brought the $30 price down to $24.

Here’s how it turned out:

I went with a local graphics firm that supports the local sailing scene. The were able to put the whole name on a single sheet. I did cut that apart to make space for the rudder as in the example from @Vanalien. These don't have "glue", which makes them different from regular stickers. Because of who I sourced them from, I didn't mind paying a bit more.
