Midseason painting

Postby talbot » Thu Aug 04, 2011 10:54 pm

We seem to have entered midsummer doldrums here. No wind forecast over 7mph for a week. Maybe a time to pull the boat and refit. But I wonder:
--My boat is bottom-painted with Interlux VC17, a relatively mild copper-based antifouling paint that keeps the slime off.
--I didn't repaint this spring because I launched April 3, when it's still ski season in Oregon. (The boat is slimy, but I've had more sailing this year than the last 3 yrs combined.)
--Is it worth it to repaint midseason with VC17, or should I wait until next season? Will the antifouling properties degrade such that I'd have to repaint next year anyway?

I would again like to launch as soon as the marina opens, at a time when it's too cold for most paints and adhesives to work. I'm wondering if these summer doldrums are an opportunity to get ahead on next season, or an invitation to waste a lot of time.

I would stay in the current season and for go the repaint for now and give your hull a good thorough cleaning. Brad

If you sail far into the fall and have no facility where you can do the work indoors in the winter, I don't see a reason why you shouldn't take a week off - especially with these midsummer "doldrums."

Just make sure you don't end up on the hard long after conditions have improved and you are eager again to be on the water.

(I did what I thought was a well timed refit like that last year, but I didn't quire finish on time and missed a race night - matter of a few hours, but still :) )
