thwart support repair

Postby calden » Sun May 21, 2006 6:45 pm

Hey all:

I noticed that the fiberglass tabs supporting one of my DSI thwarts is bending outward, and actually starting to break off on one edge. It's only a matter of time...

So I was thinking of simply grinding away the tabs that exist and replacing them with either aluminum or other metal supports of the same size, about 4" x 8", folded into an "L" shape.

Fiberglass question: Can I simply epoxy, and then epoxy cloth over them, the new tabs onto the cleaned and ground area of the centerboard housing, or will I have a problem with metal-to-fiberglass adhesion?

Any other ideas on the best way to do this repair would be welcome.

Also, I'm concerned that the tab being loose indicates that it was loose when I put on the newly-made thwarts this year (old boat bought last fall.) Can someone please measure their very-good-condition DSI and give me the beam measurement right at mid-thwart? It's not the spec beam measurement - that's 6'3", but that's not at the thwart. With an accurate measurement at the thwart I'll be able to determine the beam width it's supposed to be.

Thanks much for all the help so far..
