stripping off old paint

Postby Guest » Sat Feb 19, 2000 1:00 am

Hi folks --

I am in the middle of sanding my DS1, which had been badly painted before -- my guess is that the previous owner did not sand anything before slapping a new coat of paint over the existing peeling paint. I've had to remove almost all of the existing paint, right down to the bare gelcoat, and I'm having moral dilemmas about a couple of things -- hope you can help!

1) Does anyone know a good method for removing cracked and peeling paint from the textured 'nonskid'on the forward deck and the bench seating? Most of the cracking and peeling seems to originate down in the "valleys", and I find that if I try too hard to sand these out, I'm actually removing the texture as well. Is there a chemical stripper I can use on fiberglass?

2) OK, so it's getting warm here in Tallahassee, and I'd like to slap some minimal hardware back onto the boat and taker her out -- is it wise to do this without a coat of paint on the hull? I can't damage the gelcoat, can I?

Thanks in advance!
