mast repair

While sailing Memorial Day during a pretty good blow my port shroud parted sending my mast over the side. I managed to retrieve the mast and sails and have now decided to restore my mast to it's original design. Since I never shortened it when it was stepped I will have the right length but what cocerns me is the repair. I've had a very reputable welder do the fix but before I try it under load I'd like to know if others have had mast repaired with success. The mast was repaired by inserting an inner sleeve of aluminum pipe and welding the seam.

I've raced my Day Sailer with two different racing masts that where welded. With no problems because of the welds.

Both of those racing masts have been replaced by my insurance company because of other problems, such as:
Towing the Day Sailer on it's trailer under a tree limb at a new regatta site.
Shroud breaks at the spreader.
