I take it, the spar urethane is a one-component oil based formulation?

Yup. Goops on nice and thick, flows easy. Great for turning wood that's not in the best shape into a piece of plastic.

Put a coat of teh oil finsish on the coamings yesterday. Oddly, the wood is kind of fuzzy, almost like suede or velvet. Sanded progressively from 150 to 320 grit, still had the fuzz. The coat of oil did noothing to tame it. Kind of odd. May end up having to urethane them, afterall. It's nice having the wood all soft to the touch, but I don't think it'll wear all that well.

Anybody seen wood do that before? Is it just because it's old?

My coamings felt that way after I sanded them. I didn't think that going to a very high grit was going to work, but thankfully, I was planning epoxy and didn't need anything. Perhaps it's the wood? Don't know.

While I was using PU, the edges would always scrape off, leaving bare wood, which I sanded and re-coated. You'd think that would be a lot of wear, but it wasn't noticeable.
