The torqueedos have had my interest for a couple years, but I'm really frustrated with battling wind and tide with my Minn Kota E55. If I come across a cheap gas 3.5 horse I'm jumping on it!!!

The way I see it, the Torqeedos are just not competitive on price at this point. If they didn't have a captive market (reservoir or lake sailors where gas engines are simply not an option) I would have expected the price to have come down more. Too bad, because I think they would do well on a DS.

For smaller boats, there's a US alternative, called Electric Paddle. I had a nice conversation with the guy who runs the outfit, but they are aiming at much lighter boats. Their design has some very nice features, though, like kick-up when you hit an obstacle, and it's very light and stores flat (their propeller looks more like an airplane propeller).

If I ever feel I need power for my other dinghy (8') that would be the first thing I would look into.
