Broken sheave

Postby Karl Teske » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:42 pm

I have a broken sheave, do I replace the masthead or is there a replacement?
Also, if there is a replacement, do I use for a pin through the masthead and sheave?

Yes, you can buy replacement sheaves. I've used clevis pins but you could use a bolt for the axle. https://www.dwyermast.com/families.asp? ... e=Hardware is a good source for both parts.

I got my sheaves from D&R Marine. Also used the clevis pins - just felt more comfortable using a smooth surface for the axle.

As the pin or bolt will be stainless and the masthead is aluminum, a bit of TefGel would not be amiss to prevent corrosion.

Ok thanks, do you just drill out the original pin that is in the masthead?

Yes you drill them out, the pins are basically rivets so carefully drill off the head and you can punch it through.
