This is the new standing rigging that I purchased from D&R Marine. These are the full turnbuckles and the quick connect forestay. This quick connect set up works soo slick. It is an absolute must for the trailer sailer. It might have been a few bucks more but worth every penny. 1/8" wire upgrade was part of the package. These boats were undersized when it came to its rigging. One of the most important upgrades you can make is to upsize to the 1/8" 1x19 wires. The complete upgrade included new stainless steel "real" turnbuckles. These will be covered with PVC protectors I bought from West Marine. They are basically just tubing with a cap. Should help keeping lines from becoming chafed.

Yup, that's what I was just describing in my last post!

Curious about your 3-hole stemhead: is that original? My '79 has the regular 2-hole ...

Tim...

That stemhead is not original. I replaced my 2 hole, which was half the size and replaced it with what you see in the pictures. I needed a bit more room for the roller furling spool. It was close but the spool clears it. This is awesome piece of hardware.

My DS1 came with a stemhead like that, now I wonder whether that was an upgrade... Or did O'Day "dumb down" the stemhead when they went to the DSII?

This is the 2 holed stemhead that I replaced. It seemed original 1983 Oday, based on no other holes beneath it. The 3 hole one in previous pictures came from Rudy's shop, so I assume it is an Oday part. I do not know which boat it was meant for but will ask him when I talk to him again.

Rudder and tiller as I bought it... Years and years of neglect. I brought it down to D&R to look at and said that although it was original, Oday had a bunch of these setups left over from the 15 (which didn't do so well) and decided to fit the daysailer up with them from 1983 on. It wasn't really intended as a DS rudder/tiller.

I coated the solid ash tiller 4 times with Cetol. I next mounted the tiller extension clamp and jam cleat for the line that hold the rudder down. I drilled pilot holes and used brass screws. A new line was whipped and installed through the top hole in the blade and then re routed to the tiller and cleat. The rudder blade was washed, wet sanded and waxed. There are two good sized dings that I am going to fill and sand out this week. I put it all back together and must say it looks 100% better.

Rudder looks great!

On that 3-hole stemhead, are all 5 mounting screws reaching tapped holes in the L-bar underneath?

Yes, they are drilled and tapped into what I was told is a brass plate glassed into the deck at that location. Rudy down at D&R installed it.

Only reason I ask is that there have been instances of stemhead failure, where the whole front end of the deck has been pulled up and away from the hull.

Don't remember if this is a DS1 or 2 specific problem, but it *has* occured several times, at least once at nationals if I recall ... ?

Apparently there is an L shaped bar of (whatever) metal glassed into the bow which acts as a combination bow eye/stemhead reinforcement, and on some boats, some of the 2 (original) stemhead bolts didn't actually "sink in". Somebody awhile back posted pix of one of them barely catching the edge ...

Other failures have occurred where the lower portion of the "L-bar" wasn't securely glassed in to the bow.

So, this has me puzzled: are there actually two different pieces of metal under there?

Either way, Rudy = God, and if he gave it his blessing, then I need to go back to bible school!

The stem head with the 3 holes looks like one from a Mariner or a Rhodes 19, their stem head looks the same (I have a Rhodes 19). Also, your rudder blade and rudder head look the same as what came with the DS3.

There seems to have been a lot of "oh let's just use the parts we have in stock". My DS has spreader fittings from a Javelin. Go figure.

The KALEIGH B got her "some what original" look back today. The colors are the same but the tail piece and the lettering are from a DS 3. Theses decals have some age to them which made me curious as to how they would behave. There was still a shadow from the previous striping so we had an excellent line to go by. I used the wet application method. This requires a solution to be sprayed on the hull as well as the decal. It allowed us to move, place and then sometime replace the decal until it is in the proper position. We used a squeegee to get all the bubbles and air out from behind the decals. Once the decals had set up and all the bubbles are out the clear plastic protective covering had to be removed. These decals are original O'Day stock and Are old. The protective coating came off, but not without some extra work. It left behind a ton of adhesive. A few hours of elbow grease and a citric based cleaner removed the gummy tacky leftover. Satisfied with the way things went I warmed up he decals with a heat gun, removing any remaining bubbles and giving the adhesive permanency.
