I have a 4hp Mercury long shaft that is a 4 stroke and about 50lbs or so. It is mounted on the transom, not a bracket. I frequently sail in Buzzards Bay/Woods Hole/Falmouth MA area, and Barnegat Bay in NJ - with 4-5 folks and gear on board. The power of the 4hp is more than enough to get me back expeditiously with a loaded boat, against wind and tide, in all conditions appropriate for the boat.

Thanks again for all of your feedback.

I'm still thinking about either the Lehr 2.5hp propane or a Nissan/Tohatsu 3.5-4hp gas. Sounds like they both work well for DSers on this forum.

My main consideration now is whether the extra power and long shaft outweigh the environmental benefits of the Lehr (but with short shaft & lower hp).

GreenLake gives a really solid analysis which points toward anything over 2.5hp not making a difference anyway, and John states that his Lehr short shaft is adequate. But I have to admit, I'm still drawn to more power deeper in the water!

Tough decision so would welcome any additional thoughts...
