Tim,

From what I've read (and dimly remember), lock washers would probably be inferior here.

Looks like there's room to drill the bolt below the nylocs. If yes, you could simply drill and push some SS wire through and twist off. For peace of mind. Like, for use on the FL120 or wherever you really don't want them to come loose :)

Yeah, you're probably right GL, although I doubt lock washers would work any better on the half-rounds either. I like your safety wire idea, tho don't know how accurately I could drill such a hole thru the bolts? I was actually thinking of using those last few threads to just screw on 4 more nyloc nuts as "lock nuts" ... ?

Trust me: I really don't want them to come loose, whether it be the FL 120 or an afternoon sail on Lake Dias! ;-P

I don't know whether unusual accuracy would be required. A bit of patience perhaps, and a cobalt bit, because the bolts are stainless. You can always to a trial run on another bolt.

If when drilling you use a small amount of oil, the drilling will be easier.

John

We do a lot of drilling of SS at work, and yes, we use both cobalt bits and fluid. However, I was not able to do the drilling I needed to do there ...

We were thinking that you'd do this one calm afternoon on the lake - with a cordless drill while hanging over the side :)

Greenlake, I thought he would try it while sailing with his daughter at the helm.

Somewhere is the picture of some guy's girlfriend doing yoga (and headstands) on the foredeck of a DS. Hard to compete, but if you give it a good try?
