Reattaching side stay to mast

Postby gregL86 » Wed Jul 20, 2022 3:05 pm

I need to reattach my side stay to the mast. Luckily it snapped off when I was tightening the forestay on land vs sailing.

What’s the best attachments to use? It looks like a previous owner reattached the forestay with hex washer screws.

Rivets.

The factory original is rivets where the mandrel stays in place. They are closed rivets and keeping the mandrel may make them incrementally stronger in shear (that's something I don't know for sure, but if you can find some with an aluminum mandrel, those would match what these boats shipped with (at least for the models I know).

Even standard aluminum pop rivets should be fine. Look up their shear strength: the stays are tightened to a few hundred pounds and you have three rivets sharing the load. But you should get the closed end ones, so water doesn't get in your mast during a capsize.
