Spreader base repair

I need advice on repairing the spreader base. DR marine has a nice pic at this link:

The two rivets at the side of the base are holding, but the forward rivet keeps popping out. Other than a larger rivet (again) is there any other fixes?

Can I replace the side rivets with a through bolt through the mast and securing both bases?

Should I get rig of the rivets and tap for a screw?

I've got a similar situation, but it's my side rivets, and they're just slightly loose. The spreader bars can wiggle just a bit. I'd be interested in what other people think about screws and through-bolts.

I believe that loose spreader rivets are something that should be addressed. If the front rivet comes out like that, it means the mast is pushing foreward. A swinging spreader would allow the mast to move and take less load.

Perhaps you should look into what causes your mast to push too far forward.

Alternatively, if you believe it's simply a matter of rivet strength, you could try tapping the hole and use a machine screw instead of a rivet - your mileage may vary.
