Slot in mast for sail slugs

Postby Clyde » Sun May 13, 2012 4:18 pm

I recently added slugs to the luff of my main (from Sailrite) to ease the raising and lowering of my main. Problem: the wider "feed" area in the mast is about 12 inches above the boom so when the sail is lowered the slugs - and the sail - come out of the mast slot and the sail flops into the cockpit.

Any suggestions on how to remedy? Cannot use a stop as the sail then bunches way too high. I need, of course, to have a suitable opening closer to the boom to feed the slugs - and the boom.

Hi Clyde,

There have been a couple discussions on this board about mast slot gates or covers, here being one of the more recently updated.

Perhaps this can offer some suggestions....

I just installed an external Mastgate http://mastgates.com/ and it really was straightforward. You actually want the opening in the mast where it is so that you can load the sail slugs below the slot opening, then with the gate closed the slugs just slide past and stay in the slot when raising the main.
