I've been slowly rigging my DS-I for a spinnaker, and actually had the opportunity to set it this past weekend.

One problem I had was dousing the spinnaker. I found that the halyard kept jamming on the block on the mast. The only way to free it was to go up to the bow, and pull it down.

I am theorizing that the problem is due to the halyard block I have selected, a Harken 22mm micro block. What I think is happening is that the sheave in the block is relatively large compared to the diameter of the outer metal of the block, and the halyard is rubbing on the mast.

I do not have this problem with my jib halyard, which is a dwyer block DH-911.

This block has a larger outer diameter, which I believe keeps the jib halyard from rubbing on the mast. (The angle could also be making a difference)


Does my theory sound reasonable ?

Does anybody have any other recommendations for the spin halyard block ?

Besides the Dwyer block, doe

I went with the 29 mm bullet block from Harken for my UPS spinnaker and it is free rolling. I think your theory makes sense. I'm also using 1/8 in. amsteel for the part of the halyard that is rolling through the block.

Hi Bill, is there a swivel on that Harken block? And the Dwyer block?

I'm fairly sure I'm using Ronstan Series 30 blocks with swivel, and never had a problem.

I have the block connected to the mast with a padeye that has been pop riveted in. I copied the setup I had on the jib halyard.
The is no swivel on the block, so the block sheave lies bow to stern, resting on the mast.

I'll invest in a swivel block, which I assume will lay parallel to the beam.

How far above the Jib halyard should you put your spinnaker halyard?

The Day Sailer Handbook states the top of the spinnaker halyard sheave is to be no higher than 15' 5" above mast datum 1, which would place it 2" above the shroud attachment points.

I see you are on Canyon Lake, and I assume that is the one in Texas? My boat is on Canyon Lake, TX at the LCYC and is spinnaker rigged. If you are in Texas, let's get together and talk DS.
