Reef Points in Main Sail

How many have reef points in your main? We were out last Saturday and it was windy and got to thinking it would be great to have a slab reef to shorten the main. How far up on the main are your reef points? Thanks!

reef points

Postby Roger » Mon May 09, 2005 6:40 pm

My first (and only) set of reef points is just under the first batten. If I recall correctly that was 39" on the luff and 43" on the leech of the main. I sent it to my sailmaker and he charged about $90 for the two crinkles and 3 intermediate grommets.

I have not had opportunity to use it yet, so cannot comment further. I would assume the next set up, would be the same percentage reduction in sail area, and closest to the next batten?

I set mine up with a single line jiffy reef, but if I was doing it again, I would set it up as a two line jiffy reef, to reduce the amount of loose line when reefed.
