Storing Sails

Postby Guest » Mon Sep 01, 1997 12:00 am

Can anyone give me tips on storing sails for the winter in a damp, salt air climate (Cape Cod). Are they better off hung out, folded, rolled up, bagged or what?

The previous owner really messed up the sails. It looks as if they had been rolled up and stood on end for years the trailing edges have multiple creases running the whole length. Can Dacron be ironed?

Ask your question to your local Day Sailer sail expert - Norm Cressy at Doyle Sailmakers 89 Front Street Marblehead, MA 01945 617-639-1490

I store my three sets of sails rolled in their sail bags on a flat surface in the rafters of my garage out here in the dry climate of Golden, Colorado and never had a problem. Be sure to take the battens out to save the elastic inside the batten pockets.

Thanks for your reply Gus.

Tell me this. I got the main sail folded up pretty neatly, but the jib is a mess because of the wire that runs through the side with the clips. Should I just fold it in half the long way and roll it up with the clips inside?
