I have seen daysalors with racing sails connect to the boom by the out haul line and the tack. It was not connected the full length of the boom. Are these better for racing? If so, does anyone know who makes them? Alll help appreciated.

It sounds like what you are describing is a loosefooted main. The class rules prohibit use of these.
