Sail number size

I'm down to the last few items of a total overhaul of my '82 DSII. Hull paint (bright yellow), stays, lines, refinished teak cuddy doors, decals, bilge leak (arg-CB wedge plate screw hole leak), rigging, bilge drain (why isn't it in the center? LOL) Bought it with new sails without numbers or letters. Did the original sails use 10 of 12 inch letters? How about the number size?

And my id number is XDY10849 N82A-D so I know my sail number is 10849 but N82 (?November) and A-D??

Ive been a lurker on this board for the past 2 years since I bought it for a whopping $500 (w/trailer) and can't you folks enough for all of the expertise here..

Thx
Mark Lounsbury

Congratulations! It looks like you are all ready to go sailing! Here is the relevant rule from the bylaws.

8.11. The DS emblem and the Sail Number of the entered boat, except for the provision of
Paragraph 2.3 of By-Law 2 (charters), shall be permanently displayed on both sides of
the mainsail.. The size and location shall conform to the current US Sailing RRS
specifications for display of sail numbers and class emblem, except that number
dimensions shall be 12 inches high x 8 inches wide x 2 inches thick.

Welcome to the forum. I think this deserves a separate thread, so I made one for you.

According to this; http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm
there's a pattern used before '84, where M82E would correspond to DEC of 82. However, the sample they show gives an M and not an N in the location as in your ID number.

Thanks!
It could me an M, the paint could be obscuring part of it.

Hmm, just reading that again. Is this really saying that the DS needs to have raised numbers?

The number assigned to an offshore boat shall be unique, and no other boat shall bear that number except for those boats whose sail numbers are assigned by an ISAF Class.

Hmm, the DS doesn't strike me as the ideal boat for offshore races.
