Restoring old sails

Postby jeadstx » Thu Dec 19, 2013 5:33 pm

Has anyone used Sail Care ( http://www.sailcare.com/ ) to restore old sails? I bought a new set of sails in October. I ran across this company and was thinking of trying to get my 25 year old set refurbished/restored. I would prefer to use the old set for events like the Texas 200 where heavy winds prevail and use my new set for day sailing and the occasional race that I do. According to their price list, restoring sails is relatively cheap compared to buying new sails.

I have used them several times. They will clean the sail and restitch worn seams. They re-resin the sails. I had them put a new uv panel on my furling jib. Sails look new

If you sails are shot they will tell you

I sent my main to them. It had holes worn at the base of the batten pockets and was dirty and I wanted to put a reef point in and sail numbers.
After they got it they told me I needed the bolt rope reset also. in all it cost me about $425 after all was said and done. The sail was clean and all repaired and had all I wanted done. I was expecting a crispy fill due to the re-resining but it was not like a new sail. I think I should have bought new sail. I thought the sail may have been worn out but I use it and it seems to do well. I would have still wanted the reef pt. and numbers so it would have still cost extra. It was the one I had at Wurstfest. your new sails looked real good. and low cost for what you paid for them.

I have also used Sailcare to refurbish a Hobie 16 sail. I thought it would come back looking new, but it didn't. It was clean, all the loose stitching had been fixed and it was crisper. I now understand, you can only do so much with old sail cloth. I think if the cost is greater than 50% of the cost of a new sail, it is not worth it.
