Mainsail slugs

Postby Guest » Sat Sep 29, 2001 4:36 pm

I will put in my two cents worth about slugs on the main luff.

Had slugs added to the boltrope on my main in May 2001 for my DS III # 12977. No more jammed luff 1/2 way up ! (or Down) Goes up like a greased pig. Down too. Uses one of those stops with knurled stopscrew to hold loaded slugs above the gate. work was done VERY reasonably by Squeteague Sailmakers in Pocasset MA.
Like them so much I may have them added to foot this Spring.

I know my ignorance is going to show here...what is a sail slug? How does it work? and is it something that can be bought and sewn onto the bolt rope that slides in the internal mast track? or does a profesional sail maker have to modify the sail for it?
I am still getting a handle on terms like clew, luff & etc.

How many slugs did they put on the luff of your main. I called and got a quote to do mine and was told that I only needed 6 slugs. Is this plenty?
