Don't cut too low

Postby bkafer » Wed May 14, 2008 6:53 pm

My mast was cut just a few inches above the deck and a tabernacle installed.
This was too low. You cant lay the mast down and let it rest on the transom to connect the tabernacle pins.

The mast hits the roof and sticks out into the air. You have to have someone hold the end of the mast or have some wood or metal arrangement to hold it in the air while you make the connections.

So if anyone is ever thinking about cutting a mast, check here on the site and get input before taking that big step.

Mast support when using tabernacle

Postby Felix Graham-Jones » Wed May 14, 2008 9:39 pm

bkafer - read further up in this thread - you'll see a picture of a mast support on Calden's boat, or you can use the rudder pintles to hang a crutch to support the mast at the transom holding it up level with where it attaches to the mast stub. Makes the whole process really pretty simple, and easy to single hand.

I've posted up a detailed description of the "contraption" I mentioned in my earlier post.
