I may have already asked this but......I am in the process of restoring a neglected DSII and do not have a registration or anything besides the
manufacturers plate on the inside of the transom.

Hull Number 25881 Class Number 4685 manufactured in Fall River Massachusetts. Rotted main sail has DS 4685 on it.

Any idea what year my baby is?

I'm thinking maybe 1972?

Those numbers don't sound like a DS II. DSII's had the hull ID number stamped in the right transom. Sounds more like you have a DS I. That is not a bad thing.

Oops! The photos posted are definately not DSI so maybe you have one of the first DSII's. What does the rest of the cockpit look like?

From what I can ascertain it is definately a DSII based on the CB layout(two seperate lines to pull down and up) etc. from the pictures I have seen. btw. I got those numbers off of a plate that is on the inside of the transom.

Take the period off the end of that web site. Also, the close-up photos you posted look exactly like my 1979 DSII, and from looking at other boats in my marina, yours could be late 70's to early 80's.

If it was manufactured in Fall River, then it had to be made by Oday Corp according to my information. It is also definately a DS II. If it was a DS I the transom would be decked; if it was a DS III the transom would be higher. Oday built the DS II starting in 1971 and stopped production in 1986. In 1971 the sail numbers started with 4522, so your 4685 as a class number would support your speculation that it is a circa 1972 model.

HIN's were not required prior to November 1, 1972 so if you do not have a HIN that looks like XDYD4685 followed immediately by a 4 digit number line 0972 (indicating month and year of manufactur), then it was likely a 1971 or (prior to) November 1972 model.

The fact that you state that your HIN is 25881 leads me to believe that it was prior to November 1, 1972, but the class number could be late 71 or early 72.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. The problem is there is no HIN. All it says on the plate on the transom is:

Hull Number 25881 Class Number 4685 manufactured in Fall River Massachusetts

According to the Hull Number Index table listed on this site the Class numbers
4522 -- 12943 DS II O'Day (start in 71 and go to 84)

Based on my number being 4685 looks like it would slot into one of the first two years.

I have a '77 DSII, hull # is stamped on the right transom, and many more characters than yours....but the year is reflected in the last two numerals on my boat. Seems unlikely, though, that they'd stamp a # on a '77 and put a plate on an '81.

Ok I will go out and take a picture of the plate and try to remember how to post it here. I just restored the entire outer bottom and topsides including transom and sanded all the way down to original gel coat and found or saw now HIN stamped into transom.
