Problems inside.

I recently just purchased a '78 DSII and there is a problem inside the storage space. It seems that the wood block at the bottom of the mast has been stripped out. I think that the wood is just too old and too soft to hold the screws. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should go about fixing this problem?
