This issue is addressed briefly in an earlier post, but I would like to open the discussion further if I may. The manual states that the CB should not be locked down when sailing in shallow waters. Sound advice. But if the boat can be sailed in shallow water w/o locking the CB, what advavtage is there to lock the CB in deep water? Will the CB not stay down? Thank you.

As indicated in the other post, the friction almost equals the slight negative buoyancy, so getting it down requires the downhaul. After it is down, it usually stays down unless you hit bottom and it kicks up.
