Having just purchased a 1982 DS II, there is no sail numbers on my main sail.
How do I determine what my specific sail number is for my boat? Is it part of the serial number on the Transom?

It should be part of the HIN on the transom.

The serial number on my transom is: XDY12076M82J-D
So you think my sail number would be 12076 ?
How would I confirm this to be sure?

No need to confirm. But as you are not certain:
The
Hull Number Index shows that it falls in the range for a DSII, and given the range of dates and numbers, the 12076 is more than plausible.

I looked at my DS II, the sail number is the 12076. My sail number is right after the "XDY".

This link will tell you all about HINs post-Nov 1 1972:
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htmI believe that hull # = sail # on Daysailers built from then on out, and I think the hull # index bears this out ... ?

You can remove the qualifiers and up the confidence level of that statement. (Read the early posts in this forum)
