Motor Choice Help

Postby Beach4824 » Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:18 pm

Im looking into buying a 2 hp with a 20in shaft. Question I have, would a 20in shaft be too long ? Thanks.

I don't think so. I'm using an electric outboard w/ > 24" and used a trolling motor before w/ 36" shaft length. Both mounted directly on the transom (on a DS1). The prop diameter for the electric outboard is larger than typical for an outboard, so 20" should be fine, particularly if you are mounting on some bracket that might allow you some additional adjustment.

I use a 2.5 H.P. Yamaha 20 inch long shaft. Plenty of power I usually never go more than 1/2 throttle. It is attached to the built in motor well. If you use a short shaft you might have a problem with cavitation motoring in choppy waters. Most motors that are under 2.5 HP don't have reverse, to reverse you have to turn the motor 180 degrees. It takes a little time to get used to if you have to motor in tight areas. I always carry an extra gallon of gas just in case I run out of gas.

Thanks, I have a Daysailer II with a motor mount bracket about 6in off the transom and on the port side.

If the bracket is the same height as the transom, it would be the same height as the "motor well" in a DS1 that Jim mentioned. So you should be fine. I guess
