All Daysailer II Owners,

The following will serve to identify the distinct sail number for your boat, this taken from an old 1974 Daysailer II Owners Manual.

Numbers are permanently molded into the transom on all models. Example: XDYD71910774

* The first three letters represent the manufacturing serial number (XDY).

* The next (4th) letter represents the boat model code letter (D for Daysailer).

* The next four numbers are the sail or class number of the boat (7191 for sail number 7191).

* The last four numbers serve illustrate the month and year the boat was built (0774 or July, 1974).

Enjoy!

On later boats the format changed slightly, the last 4 digits may be Myym, where M = model year format, yy= model year, and m = month of production. On my 1979 DS II this reads M79E, which is Model year 1979, built in December 1978. The model year in "M" format ran from August to July, and for 1979 that was Aug. '78 to Jul '79. A = August, B = Sept., C = Oct., D = November, E = December, etc.
Also, after the 9999th Day Sailer (no distinction between DS I, II, III) O'Day moved the "D" for Day Sailer to the end of the HIN, separated by a dash. So for my boat which is Class# 10201, XDY10201M79E-D.
On the O'Day Sailboats web-site http://www.odaysailboats.com there is a page that gives the codes for other O'Day models and the format for the HIN that was used after August 1, 1984.

Rod, my 1979 DSII HIN is XDY10818M79K-D. I have gone to O'day's site and also researched info here on HIN's but have one question about my 10818. Is my sail/serial number 0818 or 10818? This is similar to your HIN and you identify your class # as the full five digits. On O'day's site they identify the model by either a D or a 1 for daysailer but only show four digits for the serial number.

Sorry it has taken me so long to answer, I don't check this forum as often as I used to. Anyway, your class# would be 10818.
The HIN breaks down as follows:

XDY = O'Day
10818 = Class# (or sail#)
M79K = Model year 1979, built in June 1979
D = Day Sailer

When the HIN system was set up, I guess no one expected to build more than 9999 of any one design, O'Day therefore had to move the model designation charactor (D for a Day Sailer) out of the USCG standard 12-digit HIN, thus the "-D" and why the website that I refered to may have been confusing.

Is your DS II the standard orange color, or like mine, the optional yellow?
