Noodles in my mast

Postby tinafred » Fri May 13, 2016 6:17 pm

I have read a lot of old topics concerning mast floatation. I feel the best idea for me was noodles in the mast. To do this I will need to remove the mast head by drilling out the rivets, remove the head, insert the noodles, then place some type of SS pin/bolt through the aforementioned rivet holes. I now have a floating mast? Good, bad, or a better way to float my mast will be helpful. Thank you for all the assistance.

For those looking at this thread later: the loads on the masthead rivets shouldn't be exorbitant, so just replacing the rivets (and sealing them if needed) should be fine. The SS pin is for replacing the axle for the sheaves, if those have to be replaced.

I would put aluminum rivets in there. You have aluminum cast in the masthead and aluminum mast. There is no significant load/pull there, so using aluminum (whatever it is) will mitigate galvanic corrosion.
