If anyone is interested the Wurstfest Regatta hosted by Lake Canyon Yacht Club at Canyon Lake (central Texas) will be the first weekend of November for centerboard boats and the second weekend of November for keel boats. http://www.wurstfestregatta.com/index.p ... regatta-i/

If we can get five or more Day Sailers we can sail as our own class, otherwise we sail as part of the Portsmouth Dinghy fleet.

I haven't registered yet, but I will be.

Indeed! Am bringing a buddy from work with wife and kiddo #2, perhaps my mother as well. If I have a babysitter you will have another crew member since wife will sail with me :-) You going to the fest Saturday evening?

I will be taking my boat out there Friday afternoon to set up and launch, get it tied up on the dock. I just got confirmation on crew today. I will be there for the party on Saturday evening. I'll head for the house (30 mile drive) about 10:00pm or so to let the dogs out and feed them, then I'll be back at the lake by about 7-8am Sunday morning for the Sunday race series. In the past they finish up the Sunday races by 3 or 4pm, then do trophy presentation. We will have plenty of time to talk. Are you arriving on Friday afternoon/evening? There is also a get together Friday evening. I think you will enjoy it.

Yes, should be there Friday evening - up in the air (work) whether it will be early or later. Bringing some family as well. I think wife would rather hit the town and shop than sail so I may be solo! No idea if we will make the party Saturday evening, basically just winging it.

Look forward to meeting you. Rigging and parking area is near where you enter LCYC. There drive down to the ramp is unobstructive for the mast being up. There will be a dock for us to tie the boats on after we launch them (for the weekend).

There are three Day Sailers so I guess we will sail with the Portsmouth dinghy group, unless two more Day Sailers show up.

Heavy rains last night, lake has come up about 5 feet already, yea. it was down about 12 feet below full level. The weather for the weekend is suppose to be good with temps in the 70's and 10 to 12 knot winds. Let's hope the forecast holds.

Curifin, it was good to meet you and Saltydog as well. I know you left before the awards ceremony. The last group awarded anything was the Portsmouth Dinghy class with which we sailed since we didn't have enough Day Sailers to sail as our own fleet. At the end they still recognized our Day Sailers as a separate fleet and awarded one trophy.

The 45th Wurstfest Regatta is over. There were about 75 boats at the event of various types, Flying Scots and Sunfish being the two largest fleets, from three different states at the event. We had good weather for the weekend with winds a little stronger than forecast, temps in the low to mid 80's in the afternoon, cool nights in the 40's. All three of us non-racing Day Sailers had a little problem with the courses we sailed since the changed them every race. Curifin and Saltydog had never been in a race (both single handed), I have, but only three in recent years. I had crew. Last time I did much racing was in the 70's. This was the 3rd Wurstfest Regatta I have done. I still don't know which flag is for which course. They changed the coarse for each race. The winds Saturday and Sunday were above 15 knots. On Saturday the winds were out of the north. We sailed 5 races on Saturday. On Sunday the wind had shifted to the southeast and we sailed two races that day. Dur to the courses not being the same for each race, all three of us missed a mark in a couple of races drawing a DNF for that race. Of our three Day Sailers, Curifin's DS1 was the fastest boat. Saltydog's DS2 seemed to be a little faster than my DS2. I only got the Day Sailer class trophy because we managed to finish the right course more than the other two boats. Curifin and Saltydog, being their first time racing, would have been very competative in the Portsmouth Dinghy fleet if they had made better starts.

I talked to one of the race committee from the boat that controled our series of races and he said they liked that Day Sailers were making a reappearence in numbers at the Wurstfeat Regatta.

Good summary!

My very next boat purchase will be one of those round flag charts to stick in the boat.

It was a bit frustrating to be lost on the course :). Binocs and charts will assist me! Also MuCH more confident in no engine... Will leave the battery and motor in truck next time.

I am STILL sore :). Extra crew would have been very good. In those winds I was overpowered even with the straps and my entire body hanging out. I did play with my wimpy vang the second day and understand a bit more about controlling the top of the sail with it. Also I am moving the jib cleats back to the angled flats on the cb trunk. At high heel I was having a hard time un cleating the jib..... This is bad because my jib makes enough power to drag the bow down enough to tap the boom.... And then BOOM you are over..... Sheeting and barbered in - spilling the main alone will not necessarily keep my boat upright and may actually flip you if you pop it bow down with the jib still pulling.

Lastly, am making a vinyl boot for the mast so those freaking jib sheets don't get fouled on the mast hinge. I had a heck of a time with that.

Thanks to advice from others I got over my fear of flipping and really pushed it second day. Very pleased with boat..... VERY impressed with effect barber haulers had. Watching these other guys tack and gybe their ds2s around has convinced me to sail with some experienced folks if I can get em... I was languishing after every tack.... Gybes, while terrifying, went a bit better.

The highlight for me was actually going wing in wing with the whisker deployed :). I almost caught that harpoon on the final dead run.

What a blast!
