Annual Membership Plea

Postby Bob Hunkins » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:48 am

OK, given that thing have been a little, shall we say tumultuous here with
the Chinese hackers and all, I feel somewhat justified in making a request.

In addition to providing this Website, the Day Sailer Association publishes
a Quarterly Newsletter, and sanctions regional and national regattas for the
class. The DSA also owns the rights to the Day Sailer class and all molds
and plugs used to build the boat. We contract with a builder(currently
Cape Cod Shipbuilding) to make new Day Sailers, and we contract to have new
plugs and molds built when necessary. But we are all volunteers. No one on
the DSA board gets paid and we have no employees.

A challenge we have been facing is that our membership has been slowly
declining. We really would like to reverse that trend, so I will ask on
behalf of myself and the DSA to consider joining the Class Association.
If you have found this website of any value, please become a member
of the Day Sailer Association.
The cost is nominal, ($35.00/year). The membership application is here:
http://www.daysailer.org/pdf/dsaapp.pdf.

In addition to helping fund this website, you will receive copies of the Day
Sailer Quarterly newsletter. Your membership allows us to continue
maintaining and publishing the class rules, helping us facilitate national
level regattas, and keeping the Day Sailer a viable one-design sailboat by
allowing us to retain control over the design of the boat.

There are a lot of boats designed about the same time as the Day Sailer that
are no longer in production and the owners are very few and far between. New
owners of such boats have no resources such as a class association or an
official website to call on to learn how to bring their boats back into
sailing trim and to facilitate contacts between them and the other owners.

A mere $35.00/year from each of you will go along way to keeping the class
association going. More importantly, our membership roster will increase
which brings bargaining power with the builder, potential new builders, and
other sailing organizations, such as US Sailing.

So, please, click on that link above and send in your membership for 2013.
Thanks,
Bob Hunkins

I've been a DSA member for a year, and I'll be sending my 2013 dues this week. It's well worth it. The magazine is interesting and this website has been incredibly helpful.

Bob

I will join as soon as I get back to town to mail in a check.

Where can I find a history of DSA. Like how did they aquire the rights, molds/plugs, for the DS and do they have molds for DSI & DSII or just DSIII do they get a % of every boat built since they own the molds and rights. How do they pay for replacement molds from dues? This is all very interesting. I know before I'm a member of DSA it is probly none of my buiseness. but like I say I'm joining soon and I was curious if it was in the Liturature some where.

I think this site is great and I have learned alot about my boat from it and will be proud to become a DSA member.

thanks for all your effort Calvin

The DSA publishes that information with the official class roster. If you don't get a copy when you join, please ask for one. I suppose it ought really should go in the handbook, which you will get a copy of also, but that's just the way it is for now.

Bob,

excellent idea running an annual membership plea.
I've taken the liberty of making this topic visible on all
forums simultaneously.

All,

I've just checked the list of users for this forum.
We've had 172 new users who joined since the beginning of the year 2012.
Of these nearly 20 have been have been active participants with five or more posts.
Some of you have been quite a bit more active than that, you know who you are.

I would like to invite all of you, but especially the more active users to follow Salty Dog and Alan
in signing up, or renewing for 2013, as the case may be.

The cost is nominal, ($35.00/year). The membership application is here and can be used for
renewal as well: http://www.daysailer.org/pdf/dsaapp.pdf.
Members get the DSA Quarterly which, in addition to the other great contents,
has the membership form printed on the last page.

Let's support this forum - and, by all means, feel free to identify yourself as
continuing or new member of the DSA by posting a reply to this plea.

Are memberships based on the calendar year or anniversary of your dues paid date? I procrastinated so long last year in joining, I don't recall when it was. When my renewal is due, will I get a pleasant reminder, or is the end of the calendar year renewal time for everyone, and I should (and will) send a check asap?

Thanks -Scott

The DSA secretary wrote me saying that she will send out renewals.
I'm sure she would appreciate if you responded very promptly with
your check. so she can wrap things up.

And, yes, membership is per calendar year.

I'm in. Just printed the form and will mail tonight with a check when I get home. Sure would be cool if we could just paypal our membership, although there is a cost involved with that.

We've just reached 300 views for this topic. So far, two people have said they will sign up. Any other takers?

No prob!

The e-mail had undisclosed recipients, but I would imagine she sent it out to everyone with a valid e-mail address on file with the DSA?

The pdf of the form was the same as the one under membership on the home page, with interactive form fields, which makes it really easy to fill in your info, print it out, and send it in with a check ...
