Cannon?

Who needs guns when you have a berserk hoard of Vikings in dragon boats...

Back to traffic problems for a moment . . . .

In terms of Canyon Lake, avoiding the traffic is probably the best idea. jeadstx took me sailing there once. We knew all about the rules of the road, and in any case, the sailboat had right of way over everyone. But that didn't seem to matter because the traffic didn't seem to care.

If you go to other waters where there are more sailors (or maybe just more of a maritime culture), learning the basic rules is important. There is lots of material on the subject, but the best way to learn is to practice, either on the water or in your imagination. Whenever you encounter another boat, even if it's a half mile away, identify which of you would have the right of way. If you see two other boats, even if you are not involved in the encounter, identify which one of them has right of way.

That will help a lot in crowded channels where there are multiple craft and multiple rights of way at play at once (overtaking vs. overtaken, windward vs. leeward, power vs. sail, starboard vs. port, etc.)

You are off to a good start. Keeping a voyage fun for you and the crew is essential. Keep exercising that judgement, and you'll be in good shape.
