Hey John

I read what you have written about the tTexas 200. That was quit an adventure. I never would have thought of doing anything like that w/ my day sailer.

Did you go to the worstfest this year? Did you race...Did Cleanbore?
I looked at results on the web page and did not see any DS races.

There were only 2 Day Sailers at the 2012 Wurstfest, John and Manuel Leblanc. As such, the DS was in the Portsmouth class. Manuel won the Portsmouth fleet with his DS. Last year we had 8 DS, so we had our own fleet.
I skipped this year because we have been campaigning a Olson 30 and scheduled practice every weekend leading up to the Wurstfest II (second weekend - keel boats). We won the PHRF spin fleet with 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 but we had the you know what kicked out of us both days in punishing conditions.

As Kleanbore said, My DS2 and Manuel Leblanc's DS1 sailed in the Wurstfest Regatta in the Portsmouth Dinghy class. Manuel took first place, I took last place. The wind was light to none all weekend. I think the forcast for the 2nd day of racing was 1 knot.

My 25 year old sails are good for the high winds of the Texas coast, but not great for racing and if looked at the pictures of my capsized boat you can see I need to remove my old bottom paint.

The pictures I took are at http://s445.beta.photobucket.com/user/j ... 7451801928 if anyone is interested. Several pictures of manuel's boat. Also a short video clip.

Salty Dog, if you might be interested in an adventure, the Texas 200 is the second week of June 2013.

I don't know if Iwill have the sea legs by then to go in my day sailer or not
I have a Macgregor 26s I might could take. I read in your article about some bigger boats in it. I would like to race my DS in some of the races at the lake after I get back in it a while. Right now they are both in storage.but I can't wait to get back to sailing. after this job I'm going to go drag the plastic off of them and work on them in my spare time. I sailed my @&& off for 10 years and then I just put them up. But they are indoors covered in plastic, they should be just like I left 'em.

I know Kerry (Kleanbore) would like to get a DS fleet started out of LCYC for racing. I'd race if we could get a fleet started. It takes 3 boats to start a fleet as I recall.

John,

Your crew looks great… the conditions, not so much. That is some mighty shiny water! Even my big UPS would have trouble making the boat move.

That looked like some still water. A bean borrito for breakfast and you coul have pulled away from the pack, (With nobody trying to steal you'r wind.)

You, Kleanbore, and me make 3. What do you do when you are in a fleet?

LCYC races need 3 boats of a one design class or similar Portsmouth rating to make a fleet. There will be trophies awarded for the series once a fleet is formed.

Hi guys,
I'd like to plan a circuit regatta for 2013, in Texas/Louisiana. I was goign to work this with Andy Katz at Arlington, but this looks like a good place to float the idea.

I was thinking three or four regattas over the course of the year, and I'd love to see Wurstfest to be one of those.

I'll try to find one in Houston, right now there's the Houston One Design Regatta in September, The Elissa Regatta in April, The Lukemia Cup at HYC in June. I will also try to see if Lakewood YC might be interested in running something for us, similar to the NACR in '11, but on a much smaller scale.

Perhaps the Arlington/DFW guys or anyone in Louisiana can offer up some ideas, ands if there's other regattas out there you want to suggest,
I'd like to hear it. Would like to ty to get the Southwest region going more.

On the subject of hauling your boat around I was wandering. My trailer has somthing like 9 or 10 inch wheels. Is that what yalls have and do they hold up to going all over the country. My boat is in Midland and 350 miles from my place @ canyon.

Sounds like the wheels are on the small end, but what is your trailer rated for?

Hey Greenlake

Its the same trailer that came with the boat. It will haul the boat fine but its not a real heavy duty trailer. I saw some like it in the photo section of this site. The part I was wandering about was the small tires. I did not know if they would hold up on a long trip or not. I had even though about loading the boat (Trailer and all) on my car hauling trailer to get it to the lake, (350 miles) once there it would be a short run to launch from then on.

thanks Calvin

Calvin,

I think as long as your tires are in good shape the smaller size should hold up okay. I run 12 inch, load range B at 50 psi. The summertime heat in New England certainly is not going to compare to Texas. However, after a long run on the interstate, I put my hand on the tires and they’re not really all that hot.

The smaller tires and wheels do make for a little rougher ride for the boat. I’m always concerned about the shock load to the hull softening it up. Putting your trailer on the car hauler would give a double suspension and a softer ride, it might well be worth doing. For a 350 mile drive, I’ll bet that the car hauler is a better trailer for driving the “Texas speed limit”.
