#1114 DS1 has been tentatively named "Uwaga"

It's Polish for "Warning."
My wife is Polish, and I'm dangerous, so it fits.

Postby SUNBIRD » Mon Dec 14, 2009 2:35 pm

SUNBIRD is a 1979 Day Sailer II
Hull I.D. Number : XDY10201M79E-D
That means her Class # is 10201
Built in December 1978 by the O'DAY Corp, 848 Airport Rd, Fall River, MA.
Originally purchased through Burr Brothers Boats, Marion, MA. they were an O'Day dealer at that time.

DS 10201 has had 3 owners and (I think) 3 names: Larry Gay (GAY DAZE) 1979-83, Steve Smith (ZACKO) 1983-96, and Rod Johnson (SUNBIRD) 1996-
I sail out of Wareham, MA.
SUNBIRD is kept on a mooring during hte season and inside our garage in the winter.

8) Further info useful to others:
For any O'Day built prior to the 01NOV72 requirement of the USCG format HIN, O'Day gave each boat 2 ID numbers, a HULL# and A CLASS #. The Hull # identifies how many total boats built by O'DAY (all Classes) and Class# identifies how many of that class. My old Widgeon was Hull# 22698 and Class# 1791. That meant she was the 22698th O'DAY boat built and the 1791st Widgeon. O'Day did have more than one factory at times, so hull# / Class# may not always add up, in other words it is possible that class# 3500 was built after 3503. It is possible that O'DAY issued Class#s in blocks to each factory?

When O'Day stopped building the DS I a block of CLASS#s was assigned to the next builder (Rebel?), if I recall it was 11000-11999 and so Day Sailer I #11000 was most likely built before my DS II #10201. There was no separate class#s between DS I, II, III, and IV (even though the DS III is not class-legal).

Often times I have seen various O'Day boats with a # listed as the Class# that is actually the Hull# (and maybe vise versa). This makes listing boats confusing (yes, even in the membership list of the DSA).

So, I'll probably add the years in because it was requested.

Also, in regards to SUNBIRD's excellent info, do we want class numbers, sail numbers, or hull numbers? full hull numbers would be good for a database, but I'm trying to keep my [ code ] table as simple as possible.

Anyway, on with the show.

Also, there's a separate thread for the DS1 which collects not just the boat's numbers and year, but also information about key design features.

The latter have proven useful in helping identify the correct age for older boats that don't have a stamped in HIN. Esp. for older boats, collecting both Hull and Class numbers is useful, since one or the other may not in fact be known by the current owner - and having at least one number would help to "date" boats.

The state registration for my boat contains a number that's believable as a class #, given the design features, but contradicts the official "year", which is also contradicted by the design features. Prior to the DS1 Design Changes list, I would have had to submit bogus information.

The lists are serving different purposes, but it would be nice to use one to fill gaps in the other.
