hull number - registration

I bought a Sunfish 2 years ago. I have lost the sales slip ! Therefore I cannot register this boat in R.I. Does anyone know if I can trace the last ( and first) owner through the hull number? This must have happened to someone else. We have used the boat in a lake , but would like to be able to use it on salt water - therefore it must be registered.
