Your paint job puts me to shame. I'll still send pix when I get them but man now there's some embarrassment factor. Great work. Did you replace the rub rail? mine is very tired and ugly. Yours shines.

"Son of a gun!!!!" :D I'm glad that I have not painted my boat yet. I've read about using Rustoleum but I thought it was the non-rattle can stuff for deck chairs, tractors, and things like that.

I just ordered my paint from Home depot. How many guarts did it take for you to paint your boat?

We used a 1/2 quart of the rusoleum black gloss for the bottom and 1 quart blue gloss for the hull. The white stripe is semi-gloss but same paint. We did three coats of the black and five coats of the blue. We thinned the blue out quite a bit so we would get a nice glossy smoothe finish. Wet sanded lightly in between coats. We were debating between paints, but definitely glad we chose the rustoleum. Very easy to work with and pretty inexpensive.

Really nice paint job. Did you thin the paint with thinner or mineral spirits ?

Yes we thinned the paint about 30-40% with paint thinner. If you do not thin it enough, it will not "flow" properly after you tip it. Thinning the paint that much, you do need to apply more coats. But it will look like glass when its done.

Hello Discoverer 138,
I have Discoverer 79 and also live in Norfolk. I've done some work on my boat, but it doesn't look as good as yours. Mostly sail out of Lynnhaven River and Willoughby.

Discoverer #138,

You have inspired me to refurbish my Discoverer, rather than continue with my "sail it until it falls apart" attitude. Thanks for chronicling your effort. I have soaked up every tip. I'll let you know how it goes.

Scott

Discoverer 138,

Looks like the paint job was done three years ago. How has it held up?

This is a very nice paint job. I am inspired to paint mine DS. When he talks about "rolling and tipping". What is that process exactly. If someone knows. I'm afraid discoverer138 is no longer on line.

thanks SD

You have one person roll the paint with a paint roller.
That leaves little bubbles.
You have another person who uses a very high quality brush and, holding the brush perpendicular to the surface, very lightly passes over the paint to "pop" the little bubbles.
That's the "tipping". It has to be done immediately after rolling.
It will leave very faint brush marks, but much fainter than if you had brushed on your paint.
Correct thinning will allow the paint to flow just enough to take care of these marks so that they are pretty much invisible.

Thanks Green Lake

I'm glad I asked. That sounds alot less labor intensive than I had pictured in my mind. I thought I would need 5 or 6 friends helping.

thanks SD
